DEAR EDITOR: I am a resident of Aurora and in my experience of skating by Chambers and Iliff,
I have seen a new homeless resident by the skate park nearly every time I pass by it and this is observable from other parts of the area.
Aurora is facing a homeless epidemic and while there are many solutions to attempt to solve this, increasing the budget of the homeless initiative can be considered one of the most efficient. This is because the homeless initiative aids individuals experiencing homelessness by helping with job opportunities, manageable housing, and rehab solutions.
This year, Aurora has spent a little more than $1.5 million out of the $3.8 million for the homeless in marijuana tax money. It would be very wise if Aurora shifts the budget of the homeless initiative to give more permanent opportunities to individuals. The DRS has presented the availability of rehabs for communities with little to no income, by giving out vouchers and lower forms of rehabs (still includes medical help, substance change, and support).
It is very essential that more attention is given to this budgeting solution of the homeless issue. What I am strictly asking for is that Aurora shifts its budget (preferably by at least $200,000) to support aiding the homeless by the Aurora City Council. I would appreciate it if this idea was brought to attention so this problem could be solved.
