AURORA | Family members of Aurora theater shooting victims are in Washington, D.C. this week lobbying for national gun control legislation in the wake of the Sept. 16 mass shooting at a Navy shipyard there.
Megan Sullivan, whose brother Alex was killed in the shootings, left for Washington D.C. hours after news of the shooting broke. She and her father, Tom, are there with other members of the Newtown Action Alliance, a gun law advocacy group.
“This is another moment where it’s just surreal that I’m even in this situation and speaking with other people who have lost their brothers and loved ones,” she said.
The Sullivans, along with the parents of Jessica Ghawi, another victim who died in the July 2012 shootings, said they will meet with seven members of Congress on Sept. 17 and 18 including U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Aurora, U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, D-Boulder and U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah.
The Sullivans said the shipyard shooting underscores the importance of national gun control legislation.
“We’re going to keep pushing along,” said Tom Sullivan. “That’s what we do.”
He said he might attend a candlelight vigil for victims of Monday’s shootings at the Navy Yard in Washington.
