TRUCKEE, Calif. | Spencer Painton’s run at the 66th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship golf tournament came to an end Wednesday in the opening round of match play.
The Regis Jesuit High School senior-to-be survived a playoff Tuesday to qualify for the field of 64 to make match play at Martis Camp Club, but Scottie Scheffler of Dallas, Texas, knocked the Aurora golfer out with a 7 & 5 victory Wednesday.

The third-seeded Scheffler won the first hole over the 62nd-seeded Painton and didn’t look back, building his lead to five holes at the turn and winning holes 11-13 to give himself a margin of seven with just five holes to play. Painton halved four holes and won the par 5, Hole No. 10, before he dropped three straight par 4s to end the match.
Scheffler advanced to the round of 32, where he drew a matchup with 35th-seeded Maverick McNealy of Portola Valley, Calif., on Thursday.
The tournament — which started with 165 qualifiers from across the U.S., plus Australia, Canada, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, England, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Venezuela and Zimbabwe — moves on without any Colorado players left in the field. Castle Rock’s Josh Seiple also lost in the first round of match play Wednesday, falling to Nick Heinen of Edmond, Okla., in 19 holes.
Painton’s Regis Jesuit teammate, Jake Kelley, missed the playoff by a single shot after two rounds of stroke play.
