ROCKY FORD |  Police in southern Colorado are looking for a woman they say stabbed an officer in the neck and took off in his patrol car.

The officer, who is expected to survive, was attacked Tuesday afternoon in Rocky Ford, a small city about 160 miles (257 kilometers) southeast of Denver.

Police say the officer was conducting a welfare check at a home when 21-year-old Shayanne Maestas came out and stabbed him before fleeing in his marked cruiser.

Schools in the Rocky Ford area were placed on lockdown immediately following the attack.

Local, state and federal agencies are searching for Maestas.
