AURORA | Police are searching for a suspect after a shooting left one person dead and another wounded near East Mississippi Avenue and South Sable Boulevard early Tuesday morning.
The shootings, which were first reported around 8 a.m., led to a lockout at nearby Gateway High School that has since been lifted.
Aurora police spokesman Officer Bill Hummel said he understands the shootings — the fourth in Aurora since Friday — may have shaken up the community.
“We had a shooting in broad daylight, and we have a suspect who is not in custody, so I understand the concern of the public,” he said.
The shootings happened at 1097 E. Evanston Way and a wounded man walked from there to a nearby 7-Eleven store at Mississippi and Sable, Hummel said.
Hummel said investigators believe the shooting happened outside a nearby apartment complex.
Police found a second man wounded outside the apartments and both men were rushed to a local hospital, he said. The man who made it to the 7-Eleven is in stable condition, but the other man was pronounced dead at the hospital, Hummel said.
Investigators aren’t sure what the relationship was between the men involved in the shooting, he said, but they don not believe the shooting was random and believe there was some connection between the men.
Police did not release a description of the suspect.
“This is the very early stages of this investigation, we have a lot of witnesses and a lot of information to sift through,” he said.
Police are asking anyone with information to call police dispatch at 303-627-3100.
