DENVER | The look of disbelief on the faces of the Grandview boys basketball team as it received the Class 5A state championship trophy Saturday might have been echoed in places around the state.

A sixth-seeded Wolves team with no superstars, but a gritty, fundamental group that stayed within themselves in key moments finished on top at the end of a 57-52 victory that gave the program its first state championship and completed a sweep of the 5A boys and girls team titles.

Coach Michael Rogers’ Grandview team beat its third straight higher-ranked, flashier opponent with the same formula of smart play, second half energy and guile in key moments to put its stunning Great 8 loss on the same floor at the Denver Coliseum a year earlier completely behind it.

Junior Dayne Prim scored a game-high Grandview with 20 points, senior Ben Boone made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 1 minute, 21 seconds, on his way to 13 and sophomore Caleb McGill added 12 as the Wolves finished the season on an 11-game winning streak for a 24-4 final record.

Grandview’s victory kept the 5A boys state title in Aurora for the eighth time in the past decade, as the Wolves joined three-time champion Regis Jesuit and two-time winners Eaglecrest and Overland as locals with titles in that span.

To get its championship, Rogers had to guide his team past George Washington, the program he took to the 2009 5A state final against Regis Jesuit and the runner-up to Eaglecrest last season.

The Patriots came in off an overtime win over top-ranked Rock Canyon the previous night in the semifinals and they built a three-point edge over the Wolves by halftime.

Grandview trailed third-seeded Chaparral by two points at the break in the Great 8 and had a seven-point deficit going into the second half against No. 2 ThunderRidge in the semifinals, so it was used to working from behind.

The Wolves got back to even against George Washington in a third quarter in which tye held the Patriots to just seven points and took a two-point edge into the final quarter on an inside basket from Prim.

Grandview’s lead reached as many as six points midway through the final period on a pair of baskets by Prim sandwiched around a layup from McGill. The Wolves lost versatile senior Gunner Gentry to fouls with just over two minutes left and George Washington took advantage to get back within one point with just 1:55 remaining.

McGill finished and get fouled for a three-point play and Boone knock down a pair of free throws, however, as Grandview pushed the lead back to six.

Patriots’ star Jon’il Fugett — whose teardrop in the closing seconds lifted George Washington over Smoky Hill in the Great 8 — got to the free throw line four times in the final minute, but made only 3-of-7 from the charity stripe.

Meanwhile, the Wolves were nearly flawless as Boone went 5-for-6 and junior Davon Walker — who transferred to Grandview from Douglas County prior to the season — made both of his attempts with 20.8 seconds remaining.

The Wolves got a key stop in the final seconds and dribbled out the clock, igniting a huge celebration in the middle of the court. The Wolves celebrated with their massive cheering section — which had been there earlier for the Grandview girls’ victory — and then got their hands on the trophy they’d long coveted.
