AURORA | Copies of Cherokee Trail High School’s 2012-13 yearbook will be redacted to cover a lewd phrase submitted by a student for a senior quote.
According to officials from the Cherry Creek School District, copies of the yearbook that have not been distributed to students will cover up a quote provided by an outgoing senior. Officials didn’t provide the name of the student or detail any disciplinary action, but Cherokee Trail senior Omer Sarwana made direct reference to the quote on his personal Twitter account.
The quote was a cryptic sexual reference.
Cherry Creek School District Spokeswoman Tustin Amole said a number of yearbooks including the quote have already been distributed. She didn’t have specific numbers, but said the remaining copies will be altered to cover up the quote.
“Senior quotes are all subject to review,” Amole said. “However, the person who reviewed it didn’t know what that meant.”
Since when is review akin to censorship? Perhaps the statement was improper, I don’t know, but if the person who “reviewed” it did not know what it meant, I have questions.
