AURORA | Police continue to investigate a fatal stabbing Friday night at an Aurora apartment complex that left a 34-year-old man dead.

Aurora police spokesman Officer Frank Fania said detectives believe they know who was in the apartment the night James E. Mills was killed, but no arrests have been made as investigators try to determine who was lawfully in that apartment, who wasn’t, and whether the slaying was justified.

The case will be turned over to Arapahoe County prosecutors once police complete their work, Fania said, and a charging decision from the district attorney’s office could take a few days after that.

The Arapahoe County coroner’s office said Mills died of a stab wound to the abdomen.

Police responded to the apartment in the 1100 block of Yosemite Street around 9 p.m. Friday on a report of a stabbing. There, officers found Mills with a stab wound and he was rushed to an area hospital where he later died.

Investigators contacted and detained several witnesses at the scene but they were released following questioning.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has any information on the case to call Detective Craig Appel at 303-739-6207. Callers can also remain anonymous by calling CRIME STOPPERS at 720-913-STOP (7867) and may be eligible for a $2,000 reward.
