AURORA | A new Aurora fire station under construction on the city’s eastern edge caught fire Wednesday night, creating a two-alarm blaze, according to Aurora fire officials.

Nobody was hurt in the blaze at the new fire station No. 15 at 1880 S. Flatrock Trail.

Fire officials announced the blaze about 5 p.m. Wednesday and said two hours later that the fire was under control.

Details about the extent of the damage have not been released.

The new station near East Mississippi Avenue and South Gun Club Road is one of three new Aurora fire stations set to be complete by 2018.

When it is complete, the new station will replace the old station No. 15, which is located in a residential house in the Murphy Creek subdivision. That station was built more than a decade ago to handle the rapidly-growing neighborhoods on the city’s eastern edge. Fire officials have said the need for fire service back then grew rapidly so the city needed a creative solution, so they worked with the homebuilders to build a house that, other than an extra-large garage for the fire equipment, looks like many others in the neighborhood.

The plan was to use that home for just a few years, but fire crews have instead operated out of it for more than a decade.

It’s unclear whether damage from Wednesday’s fire will mean the house remains a fire station for longer than planned.
