New-look Regis Jesuit — which included just two holdovers from last season — make up the entire 2012 Aurora Sentinel All-City Boys Tennis Team, which is based primarily on results from the Class 5A boys state tennis tournament.
Despite the large turnover, Regis Jesuit had another strong season, as coach Laura Jones’ team lost just one Continental League dual match — a 4-3 decision to Mountain Vista — won the 5A Region 7 championship at Ken Caryl Ranch and advanced two singles players and four doubles teams to the state tournament.
After three days of play at the Gates Tennis Center, the Raiders chalked up 17 points, good enough for sixth place in the team standings. It was also enough to get regional hosting duties back for the 2013 season, a designation which goes to the top eight teams at state.
Regis Jesuit’s doubles tradition remained strong this season, with the No. 4 tandem of junior Noah Warren and sophomore Joe Robertson producing the team’s top state place by finishing third.
The duo had a 4-1 mark in their first state tournament appearance, losing only in the semifinals to the team from Cherry Creek that went on to win the state championship. Warren and Robertson won both of their playback matches and defeated Grand Junction’s Matthew Ness and Charlie Ruckman 6-4, 6-3 to secure third place, which matched the best result for Regis Jesuit in the previous season’s state tournament.
No. 2 singles player Chanon Penvari capped a strong freshman season with a fourth-place showing, posting a 3-2 record in his first state tournament. He was 9-3 in the regular season and avenged one of his losses — a three-setter to Mountain Vista’s Michael Shin — in the opening round at state.
Penvari’s only state losses came to eventual state champion Connor McPherson of Cherry Creek in the quarterfinals and to Arapahoe’s Nick Farmen in the third-place match.
At No. 2 doubles, senior Jeremy Warren and freshman Steven Bummer went 8-4 in the regular season and won in the first round of the state tournament before falling in the quarterfinals. The duo were stopped in the playback bracket short of a place.
A pair of sophomores, Alec Jotte and Truett Davis, had a strong season at No. 3 doubles and advanced to the quarterfinals with a straight set victory in the first round at state over a team from Littleton. Jotte and Davis had a set lead against a team from Grand Junction, but fell in the third with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
Sophomore No. 3 singles player Trace Collins and the No. 1 doubles teams of junior Nate Root and senior Tim D’Costa both lost in the first round and weren’t brought back in the playback bracket.
The No. 1 team of Root — who was part of a third-place finish last season at No. 3 doubles with now graduated Case Anderson — and D’Costa had an abrupt ending to a fine season that saw them go 12-1 in the regular season. Their only loss prior to state came in the loaded Cherry Creek Invitational.
Collins was 8-3 in the regular season, but was stopped in the first round at state.
Sophomore Enzo Abbott, who assumed the brutal No. 1 singles position following a state appearance as a freshman playing doubles, was the lone Regis Jesuit player not to qualify for the state tournament.
