AURORA | An Aurora police officer looking for a suspect in a fatal shooting was shot in northeast Denver and another man was killed in the exchange of gunfire, police said this afternoon.
Denver police said at about noon on Twitter that they were investigating an officer-involved shooting in the 14500 block of East 46th Avenue. Aurora police later said it was an Aurora officer who was shot, but said the officer’s injuries are not life-threatening.
The officer shooting happened in Denver’s Montbello neighborhood, north of Interstate 70 near Chambers Road. Denver police said roads in the area had been closed as part of the investigation.
Police said that shooting is connected to an earlier fatal shooting in Aurora near Del Mar Park.
The Del Mar Park shooting happened around 11 a.m. at an apartment building at 142 Del Mar Circle.
Aurora police said on the department’s Twitter feed that they were “actively investigating” the Del Mar shooting and said one person was taken to the hospital.
At a press conference in Denver following the second shooting, Aurora police spokeswoman Officer Diana Cooley said the victim in the Del Mar shooting had died.
Cooley said officers investigating that shooting were at the home in Montbello looking for a suspect when the second shooting happened.
Denver police spokesman John White said Aurora police investigating the Del Mar shooting arrived at a home in Montbello and exchanged fire with a man who exited the home.
The man who exited the home was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
White described the investigation as “active and ongoing” and said there were few details police were ready to release.
SWAT officers were on the scene as of about 2:30 p.m., and White said investigators are working to secure a search warrant for the home.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is released.
