GOLDEN | In an upset in number only, the 28th-seeded Gateway boys soccer team bounced No. 5 Arvada West from the Class 5A boys state soccer playoffs Wednesday.

With weather playing a major factor at the North Area Athletic Complex, neither team scored until the second half, but the Olys netted the final three goals to break a 1-1 tie and went on to beat the Wildcats 4-1.

Sophomore Refujio Gomez Lopez had a pair of goals, while seniors Santiago Quintero and Cristian Valdez also scored for Gateway (8-3-5), which advanced to play No. 12 Pine Creek (12-4) — a 3-2 winner on penalty kicks against No. 21 Ralston Valley — in the round of 16. The teams are set to meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 29 at District 20 Stadium in Colorado Springs.

Seniors David Hernandez and Miguel Mendoza each recorded a pair of assists for coach Olaf Siverson’s Olys, while senior goalkeeper Alan Garcia made nine saves — including turning aside a penalty kick — in the winning effort.
