AURORA | A rumor is circling among Aurora voters that is causing them to turn in their mail-in ballots because they think they “don’t count” in the 2012 General Election.

Nancy Doty, Arapahoe County’s clerk and recorder, said more than 75 people visited early voting centers Oct. 22 gave back their mail-in ballots.

“People are coming into the centers saying they want to surrender their mail-in ballots because they didn’t believe it will be counted, and they want to vote on the machine,” Doty said.

She had no further information about the rumor or where it started.

The Adams County clerk and recorder did not immediately return calls.

About 80 percent of Arapahoe County’s active, registered voters requested mail-in ballots, and Doty’s office started mailing them to residents on Oct. 15.
