AURORA | City boys swim teams aim for championship honors and make a final push to increase their number of state qualifiers at three league meets Friday and Saturday.

The Centennial and Continental “A” League meets and the EMAC Championships represent a final tune-up for those headed to the Class 5A boys state swim meet May 20-21 at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Cherokee Trail, Grandview, Overland and Smoky Hill take part in the Centennial “A” League meet, slated for Arapahoe High School. Prelims begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday, with finals set for 3 p.m. Saturday.

Regis Jesuit is bound for the Continental “A” League gathering at Heritage, beginning with prelims at 4 p.m. Friday and concluding with finals at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Raiders, who typically don’t swim many if any of their state contingent at the league meet,  finished fourth at last season’s meet.

Coach Beth Himes’ Hinkley team — a mix of athletes from Aurora Central, Gateway, Hinkley, Rangeview and Vista PEAK in the Aurora Public Schools, plus a few others — is hoping to increase its state contingent (which currently includes sophomore Nathan Leigh and one relay, plus three divers) at the EMAC Championships at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton.

The EMAC meet opens with prelims at 4 p.m. Friday, with diving prelims at 8 a.m. Saturday followed by finals in all events at 3:30 p.m.
