AURORA | Thirteen immigrants at an Aurora detention center have not eaten in a week as they demand better treatment at the GEO Group Detention Center in north Aurora, according to a statement from supporters.
The American Friends Service Committee, which has long advocated on behalf of inmates held at the privately run facility at East 30th Avenue and Peoria Street, said the inmates started their hunger strike on Thanksgiving in conjunction with inmates at several other GEO facilities around the country.
“The detainees on strike hail from countries around the world, including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Togo, and Burkina Faso. They have been detained for between seven and twenty-three months, and many of them came to the U.S. fleeing persecution in their countries of origin,” Jennifer Piper, program director for the committee, said in the statement.
The committee is planning a prayer vigil at the facility Tuesday.
A spokesperson for GEO did not immediately return a call for comment.

Good! Allow them to not eat as long as they please, they’re eating for free, perhaps they’ll find out what it’s like to earn your meals.
When we have USA homeless sleeping on the streets in most cities, begging at stores and roadway exits or entrances, and children going to sleep at night not in a bed of their own, or knowing when they ever will again, why, why, why, do we have all these illegal aliens coming here? Why does our governor and president make it so easy for those from other countries, not speaking our language, or knowing of our culture, do we need more? How asinine can this be on part of our so-called leaders? What and where did they get the idea, this was a solution to anyone’s problems?
How long before we rise up and have an accounting as French did those generations ago, or the Russians? 130 countries – 130 languages in our Aurora 28J -K12 schools. Who would have believed it?
Frank2525, I agree with most of your entry in this discussion. However, you have to realize that this country has moved more towards entitlement than empowerment. The argument I always make is this: You look at the African/American demographic and they are very negative, unprofessional, entitled, grievance over racism, and have no moral standing in our society. You look at the African (Ethiopian, Somalian, etc.) community and are the LAZIEST people EVER! Talk about a group that do not share our values or culture; hence the radicalization of religion and way of dressing. The Asian community for the most part are accepted because of the emphasis of family and education. Then we go to the Hispanic community which are exploited as a bad perception. For the most part this group also stress family and education, however, there are certain elements of this group that make it look bad overall and should not be viewed in a bad way. This country has shifted to adjusting to the variety of people migrating here. NOT GOOD!
And I basically agree with you. We have shifted to entitlement programs, and MADE IT TOO EASY FOR HALF OF OUR POPULATION TO SIT, DRAW CHECKS, NOT WORK, AND DEPEND ON OTHER HALF TO SUPPORT THEM. That has to be changed. Newt Gingrich showed the way in 2nd term of Bill Clinton’s administration, when we had 2nd and 3d generation welfare families. Young girls getting pregnant, to have babies and collect from state-federal to support that baby or more. Live with the male, and lie about it to food stamp and welfare officials, signing fraudulent papers.
——————-I do not resent a hand up to get work, become tax-payer again, and support self. I do resent hand-outs to folks who are capable, but refuse to work.
—————
I do not resent or oppose honest immigration , legally, meeting requirements on the books, and in the law. And that goes for all races, colors, genders, religions. But I expect them to study, work with others, learn English, and assimilate, becoming full blown citizens. And live legally, honestly, and do not commit crimes.
————-
I am not opposed to Mexicans (Spanish) (Latinos – where is there a country named Latino. Same goes for African American – No such animal- There are many countries in Africa, not states like USA).
But I do resent Mexico being gateway for drug smugglers-drug cartels- who take money, and pay bribes to Mexican officials, letting people from all over planet earth come through, on way to our border, and sneaking or forcing our border agents to let them through.
Those folks do not intend to become citizens, learn our language, but come here to kill, injure, torture, or take advantage of our entitlement programs. And many of them commit crimes, then rush back across the border, out of our police reach.
THAT IS WHY I MENTALLY SUPPORT TRUMP. HE WILL BUILD A WALL, OR ALLOW AGENTS TO DO THEIR JOB. AND HE HAS SHOWN BY ACTIONS, AND TALK OF THIS IN HIS BUSINESS DEALINGS.
The other candidates (DNC and GOP) are talking of fixing Washington. That is not enough. I want that, but I also want the leader to influence rest of planet earth countries, into believing USA leads from the front, and we will not tolerate others taking advantage or disrespecting us. Reagan did, both Bush family did, and other presidents did, with a few exceptions. This one is the absolute worst in my lifetime. I don’t trust him, his words, his policies, or anything he stands for. I still honor the oval office, and Presidency. BUT NOT HIM. I DESPISE HIM. Not for color, race, education, religion, or other factor. HIS POLICIES ARE ILL THOUGHT OUT, AND HE HAS NO PLAN. JUST REACTS, AND IS WRONG.
I believe Obama and the Democratic far left have irreversibly changed this country from the land of the free, to the land of free … free housing, free food, free medical, free loading.
I think Bronson might be a racist. Most of the African immigrants I know are decent and hard working.
Of course there are exceptions, as there are among Hispanic immigrants. Bronson is kinda like a progressive,
they always conflate illegal immigration with legal.
I had to read the last few comments here, and I don’t see why you think Bronson might be racist. But I would caution you of your trust in anyone in past 7 years, since HOPE AND CHANGE became the life goals. In my life, I learned of those who attended church regularly, then preyed on those they met. I never met anyone in those years, where race, color, speech, or religions was pertinent to conversation or life. Did learn that certain individuals would prove to not be friends, or to have problems. But we neighbored, helped each other, and knew other people.

That has changed in past 7 years. Before that some folks came from other countries, spoke different languages, or in code, but lived in separate enclaves or parts of cities, and was not a problem.
——
that has now changed with drugs, alcohol, gun smuggling, people smuggling, and changes of what is considered as society to include practices not seen or done before. And they now appear on radio, television, in media demanding their way of life must be promoted, respected, and is now the leadership way of life. However, in politics those same items are declared to be hindrance. DOES ANYONE SEE THE CONTRADICTION AND CONFUSION NOW. And folks are coming to USA who do not intend to be citizens, but only to fleece or change our FREEDOM to their ways. REALLY??
As a very tiny young lady (and very pretty, so I’m told), I am always cautious.
Starve to death, I don’t care, they should be deported now.
Immigrants? If they are just regular old legal immigrants, why are they in custody? Oh you mean illegal immigrants? More PC garbage.
The people on hunger strike are asylum seekers from Bangladesh and Pakistan who followed the process to come here. They are being detained indefinitely, despite the government having said they believe their fear of persecution at home to be credible and valid. Why are they still being held? Could it be because a corporation like GEO is making money off of it? These folks are on strike so they can be released and be able to work and integrate into our community. many of them fled torture in their home countries. Why are we making it worse for them now?
