LAKEWOOD | When opponents play the Columbine team, they know their time is limited to get the lead.

The run-happy Rebels have long been masters of getting in front and staying there while taking lots of time off the clock and the fifth-ranked team in the Associated Press Class 5A preseason media poll did just that to visiting Overland Thursday night at Jefferson County Stadium.

The Traiblazers’ defense played well on the whole, but Columbine quarterback Jake Lowry tossed two touchdown passes to Mikey Griebel in the opening half and took advantage of short fields to rush for a pair of scores in the fourth quarter in a 28-0 win in a game between teams that both played and won in Zero Week.

Overland (1-1) — which put up 48 points in its season opener a week earlier against Smoky Hill — had a few chances to score, but coach Seth Replogle’s team had costly turnovers or couldn’t convert on fourth down as they were shut out for only the second time in the past four seasons.

The Trailblazers meet Rangeview in an all-Aurora non-league contest at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at Aurora Public Schools Stadium.
