AURORA | One man died after crashing his car into an Aurora gas station following a “medical episode” Tuesday evening, according to the Aurora Police Department.
Investigators on Twitter said the a 62-year-old man “suffered a medical episode,” veered into oncoming and struck an RTD bus bench before he ultimately crashed into fuel pumps beside the Circle K gas station at 15291 East Hampden Avenue shortly before 6 p.m. June 22.
The driver who incurred the medical event died a short time later, police said. No additional information on what happened to the man near the intersection of Hampden and Chambers Road was released.
It’s unclear if the man died as a result of the medical event, or injuries sustained in the crash, police said in a news release Wednesday. The Arapahoe County Coroner’s office is expected to identify the man in the coming days.
The gas pumps that were struck also toppled onto a Jeep parked at the gas station, police said. One person inside the parked car sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident, but they were released from a local hospital a short time later.
The collision prompted police to close all but one lane of Hampden Avenue in the waning portion of the Tuesday rush hour, causing long traffic delays in the area.
