Relatives of slain wife still struggling with loss

DENVER | Relatives of a woman whose husband is accused of killing her after eating marijuana-infused candy say they are still struggling to adjust to life without her.

Tammy Heman said Tuesday that her sister, 44-year-old Kristine Kirk, was a devoted mother to her three sons, who are now living with her and their grandparents. Relatives say the boys, ages 7, 11, and 13, were present during the April 14 shooting and are making strides in therapy.

Police say 48-year-old Richard Kirk shot his wife nearly 13 minutes into a 911 call in which she said he was hallucinating after eating marijuana candy. A detective says the couple was having marital and financial problems.

Relatives would not talk about the case. But they say they are grateful for an outpouring of support.
