DENVER | Down a handful of goals to Cherry Creek at halftime of Saturday’s state semifinal, things looked grim for the Regis Jesuit girls lacrosse team.
The Raiders weren’t about to let their best season since 2013 end without a fight, however, and that’s just what they gave the Bruins with a furious second half rally at Peter Barton Stadium.
Playing in the Final Four for the first time in six seasons, sixth-seeded Regis Jesuit scored nine times in the second half and took a one-goal lead on two occasions in the closing minutes before No. 2 Cherry Creek rallied to escape with a 12-11 victory.
Senior Maddie Ferguson and sophomore Krissy Rael tallied four goals apiece for coach Kathryn Ames’ Raiders, who finished the season 14-4, with half of their losses coming to the Bruins. Cherry Creek also won the regular season meeting 13-8 April 6.
Senior Sidney Weigand scored two goals and sophomore Grace Weigand’s lone score came in crunch time and gave Regis Jesuit its last lead.
Cherry Creek (17-1) scored twice in the final 2:38 of regulation to earn its way into the state championship game against No. 1 Colorado Academy, which downed No. 5 Valor Christian 13-8 in the other semifinal, which went through a lengthy weather delay.
The Bruins and Mustangs meet at on May 22 on the same turf to decide the state championship for the fifth straight season. Colorado Academy has won all four of the previous meetings.
Regis Jesuit now looks to the future after an outstanding season that ended with a second round playoff win over Chaparral followed by an upset road victory at Pine Creek in the quarterfinals and the outstanding semifinal effort.
The Raiders graduated just three seniors, but all are regulars in Sidney Weigand, Ferguson and defender Gabi Eckard. With her two scores against Cherry Creek, Weigand (also the team leader in assists) finished the season with 66 goals, while Ferguson ended with 37.
