FRUITA | The Eaglecrest girls basketball team came out of the gates hot, but cooled off in a hurry Feb. 19 in a Class 5A girls state basketball first round playoff game at Fruita Monument.

Coach Robby Gabrielli’s 47th-seeded Raptors took an 11-7 lead over the 18th-seeded Wildcats after a strong opening period that saw junior Jadyn Ross score five points and junior Tatiana Coleman add four, but a scoreless second period put them a tough position.

Eaglecrest trailed by nine points at halftime and managed just 12 points in the second half as its season came to an end at 7-17.

Just two local programs were in action in the opening round of the 5A state tournament, with No. 34 Cherokee Trail winning at No. 31 Monarch in the other contest. (Full 5A state tournament scoreboard & schedule, here).

Second-seeded Regis Jesuit, No. 6 Grandview, No. 11 Vista PEAK and No. 13 Rangeview host second round games on Feb. 22.
