AURORA | The Vista PEAK boys golf team ushered in the school’s East Metro Athletic Conference era victoriously Thursday afternoon.

The first team from the Class 4A school to make the switch from the Colorado 7 to the EMAC — a 5A league where the remainder of the Aurora Public Schools teams reside — had a successful debut in the opening in the opening EMAC South minor tournament at Springhill Golf Course.

Senior Luke Meier fired a 9-over-par 73 to take top honors for Vista PEAK and coach Michael Dougherty’s Bison posted a 23-stroke victory over Rangeview, which has traditionally dominated South Division competition.

Coach Merlin Johnson’s Raiders were led by junior Levi Robinson, who played in the lead group and finished a stroke behind Meier with a 74, while senior R’Ron Fisher shot 95 to top coach Larry Taylor’s third-place Aurora Central squad.

Meier made a double bogey to open and close his front nine, but he played steady for the most part with 11 pars, five bogeys and two doubles. He was followed by a strong showing from teammates Jaren Lacabe (with an 82 that put him third), plus the trio of Sha Jefferson, Quezdon Ivey and Bruce Cooper, who tied for fourth with 83s.

Robinson — playing in the top spot for Rangeview as senior Jared Clanton recovers from a wrist injury — made a birdie on the opening hole and played neck-and-neck with Meier until he lost three strokes between Holes No. 15-17 to drop a stroke off the pace. Varsity newcomer Derrick Watson was next for the Raiders with a 91.

Brandon Zabel shot 105 to lead Hinkley to a fourth-place finish, while Saben Brooks shot 110 as the top result for fifth-place Gateway.

Vista PEAK and the other APS teams get to see how they stack up in the EMAC as a whole when they meet up with the North Division in the first of two major tournaments, which is scheduled for Aug. 17 at Buffalo Run G.C.

Rangeview led the way among South Division teams last season in third place.
