AURORA | Hinkley started strong and held off a late Gateway surge Wednesday to win the opener of the annual Aurora Public Schools Tip-Off Classic.

The Thunderbirds outscored the Olys 17-1 in the second quarter to take a 19-point lead into halftime and finished of a 57-44 victory at Aurora Central High School.

Terry Wedgeworth scored a game-high 18 points — 13 in the second half — while Chance Drake added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Hinkley, which won its third consecutive game against Gateway and gave Calvin Kelley a victory in his debut as head coach.

The Thunderbirds meet Aurora Central at 5 p.m. Friday with a chance to improve to 2-0 in the tournament.

Coach Mike Corrado’s Olys got as close as six points at several junctures in the fourth quarter and were still within seven at 51-44 with 1:03 remaining, but back-to-back technical fouls allowed Lee to make four free throws and put the lead into double figures.

Juniors Austin Hall and Anthony Holmes had 12 and 11 points, respectively, but both fouled out in the fourth quarter.

Gateway takes on Rangeview — a 57-45 winner over Aurora Central — at 7 p.m. Friday.
