Vail Mountain to increase groomed snow for skiing

VAIL | A Colorado resort plans to increase the amount of snow it grooms for skiing.

Christmas-VDN-122515_HarrThe Vail Daily reports ( that Vail Mountain plans to groom an additional 2,000 acres of mountain terrain per week and increase the frequency of grooming in certain areas.

During the past few years, snowcat operators have been grooming between 7,000 and 9,000 acres each week.

Vail Mountain’s senior director of mountain operations Elizabeth Howe says the increase includes grooming some runs nightly rather than two, three or four times a week.

She says they will also increase the rate of surprise grooming on runs that normally aren’t groomed.

According to Howe, Vail Mountain decided to increase grooming after installing a data-tracking system on the snowcats two years ago. The data showed that they could optimize performance with more training.
