Telluride, June 22, 2 p.m – It’s not Alison Krauss’ fault that she sings sad song after sad song as she did as the headliner June 21 at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. They suit her beautiful but wispy voice. After singing about divorce, strangulation, dying and loss, told the crowd that the band seeks out ballads and dirges that express all sorts of negativity. Krauss even joked from the stage about not allowing happy songs in the setlist. Hearing Union Station again after a break of a couple of years reminded me what a virtuoso group of singer/instrumentalists that Krauss brings with her. Especially affecting was the band’s set-closing series of songs around a single mike including “Down to the River to Pray” (from “Oh Brother Where Art Thou”) and “Long Jorney Home” (from her album with Robert Plant.)

koto.org is streaming most of the 39th Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival live.
