BREW NEWS: Launch Pad gets into barrel aging; more pumpkin beers

AURORA | When he started Launch Pad Brewing Co. earlier this year, brewer and owner David Levesque knew he wanted to dabble in barrel aging.

With a brewing set up on the small side, aging a few brews in whiskey, wine or tequila barrels seemed like an ideal fit, he said.

The plan, Levesque said, is to put about 53 gallons of his Soyuz Russian Imperial Stout in the whiskey barrel for a few months. He plans to tap it sometime around December.

Launch Pad chose the Russian Imperial because while it’s heavy and has a hefty alcohol content at 8 percent ABV,  it’s not quite as strong as some other offerings. Their barley wine, for example, comes in at 12 percent, and Levesque said that wasn’t ideal.

“We  thought that might be a little too hot to put in,” he said.

When they finally tap the brew, Levesque said he expects it to go quickly, but he hopes to start aging other brews in wine or tequila barrels, too.

Because the calendar says October, that means even more pumpkin beers than last week.

At Copper Kettle Brewing Co., you can stop by for a pint of their Ginger Pumpkin Red Rye, a sweet and spicy brew that comes in at 7.1 percent alcohol by volume.

And the other newcomer to the area’s pumpkin scene is at Coda Brewing Co., where the Pushkin Imperial Pumpkin Ale tapped this week. Brewed with 100 pounds of real pumpkin and a dash of exotic cinnamon and spice, this hearty brew comes in at 8.4 percent alcohol by volume.

Dry Dock Brewing Co., Mu Brewery and Two 22 Brew also have pumpkin beers flowing this week.

And October isn’t just about pumpkins. With Halloween a few weeks away, brewers also can’t resist getting in on the zombie fun.

At Lone Tree Brewing Company, the brewery’s Zombie Red IPA is set for an Oct. 24 release. According to the company, bombers of this 8.5 percent India Pale Ale have sold out in one day.

Brandon, where de heck are all these guys? An address list would have been helpful…… I’ll have to separately google them to find them. J. Dougherty, Aurora
