AURORA | The Anschutz Health and Wellness Center feels like home to personal trainers Chris and Heidi Powell.
The couple live in Arizona, but they keep coming back to the 95,000-square-foot fitness facility on the northwestern edge of the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. That has a lot to do with the couple’s day job. As the lead personal trainers on the ABC reality show “Extreme Weight Loss,” fitness is a big part of the Powells’ professional lives. The show follows the Powells as they work with volunteers to lose hundreds of excess pounds and change their lifestyles.
Last year, the Powells and the show’s participants set up camp at the Health and Wellness Center for an intensive, 90-day workout regimen. The Powells worked with Executive Director James Hill, Medical Director Holly Wyatt and the center’s staff of trainers and nutrition experts.
A year later, the Powells were back at the center to interview the final candidates for season 5.
“When we walk through the doors, it’s the same front desk people and the same family that I know treated our Season 4 people so well,” Heidi Powell said. “We need to know that our system can be implemented the same way it was before.”
That system comprises an intense weekly schedule of cardiovascular exercise, weight training and mental rehabilitation. The center’s fitness facilities, research labs and in-house bistro dedicated to healthy food was the perfect place for the 17 participants who took part in season 4, which debuts on ABC in May, they said.
