AURORA | Aurora police on Friday arrested a 57-year-old man on suspicion of felony assault after he barricaded himself in the basement of a home and lit a fire inside the residence.
For more than an hour, Aurora police officers flanked the 24200 block of East Davies Place in the city’s Tallyn’s Reach neighborhood as negotiators attempted to coerce Gregory Ewing out of a home.
Police first reported a “physical disturbance” in the neighborhood off of East Arapahoe Road shortly after 11:45 a.m. Jan. 22, urging residents to stay out of the area. Nearby Coyote Hills Elementary School was briefly placed on a secure perimeter as a precaution.
Shortly before 12:30 p.m., police confirmed that a female who had been inside the house with Ewing had been extricated from the residence.
A short time later, Ewing reportedly ignited a fire inside the home, prompting Aurora police and firefighters to enter the home to arrest him and combat the blaze.
Additional charges against Ewing involved in the incident are pending, police wrote on Twitter.
