QUIDNUNC: Gardner’s puny polling prompts prolific prospects, and polliteration

Quidnunc, whose name comes from the Latin “what now,” is out and about as often as possible  to bring you news overheard in elevators,  rest rooms and spied in various e-mail boxes.

QUID HAS HEARD that Colorado Democrats now seriously believe the knock-out bell tolls for thee, GOP Sen. Cory Gardner. Seems that up to a dozen or so Dems have lined up to take a swing at the state’s junior senator, who in one recent poll was disliked by possible Colorado voters even more so than President Donald Trump. With all the grace and compassion of a coyote sensing an injured animal, it seems that there’s about a Dem a day jumping in the race. It’s a contest pundits say would normally be a place only for sacrificial lamb candidates. This week, Denver state Sen. Angela Williams jumped into the fray, offering yet another Dem with statewide name recognition like Trish Zornio, Lorena Garcia and Ellen Burnes. Yet to come is whether bigger name sharks like congressmen Ed Perlmutter, Joe Neguese, Secretary of State Jena Griswold and the nation’s most forgettable presidential candidate, John Hickenlooper, sensing an easy win, will duke it out for a free seat in the U.S. Senate. With Gardner polls this dismal, and a tidal wave of Obamacare and abortion political commercials headed this way, one of the biggest questions unanswered is whether state Republicans will throw Gardner a boat anchor and a primary challenger, or whether Gardner might just run against himself. One hack here suggested that the “anyone but Gardner” prognosis is so grim that even more Dems are certain to move in on the wounded prey. Your faithful hack hopes for the sake of having a race more interesting than months of wonk talk from Andrew Romanoff or favorite teacher stories from Mike Johnston, that some careful carpetbaggers could make this a year of living much more dangerously and interestingly. Quid nominates Hillary to run for the Dem nomination, because, her emails. Just as amusing would be a dream-team nomination for Pat Schroeder or Bette Middler. In the mean time, yours truly is buried in determining which campaign website mountains are genuine Colorado fourteeners or fodder for next week’s installment.
