STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. | The Colorado Department of Transportation is finishing the widening of the westbound bore of Colorado’s Twin Tunnels near Idaho Springs.

Crews plan to work overnight Saturday to move westbound Interstate 70 traffic into the newly widened tunnel. A ceremony planned for Sunday has been cancelled because of an expected storm.

Last year, transportation officials widened the eastbound bore of the Twin Tunnels, which, as of Thursday, are now named the Veterans Memorial Tunnels.

The Steamboat Pilot and Today reports (https://bit.ly/1x64qba ) that the project’s completion before the holiday season is expected to reduce the construction delays travelers have seen the previous two years driving to and from the Western Slope.

CDOT says work to move eastbound traffic into the other tunnel is scheduled to begin Tuesday evening.
