GREELEY, Colo. | A Weld sheriff’s deputy and a corrections officer remain on administrative leave pending an investigation into an inmate’s escape from a Greeley hospital.

Raul Alaniz had been held on suspicion of charges including assaulting an officer, but authorities say he was taken to the hospital Friday after complaining of blood in his urine. He was handcuffed to a bed but escaped and assaulted a corrections officer in the room.

In an update Tuesday, authorities said Alaniz took the officer’s gun, pointed it at a firefighter in the room and pulled the trigger, but the gun didn’t fire. They say Alaniz pointed the weapon at others, including a sheriff’s deputy, as he fled.

Alaniz ran to a home, where he took a hostage before apparently killing himself. The hostage wasn’t hurt.
