Aurora eatery voted top Chinese restaurant in the metro area

5280 magazine is out with its Top of The Town 2012 awards with lots of food categories. Aurora’s China Jade was named Editor’s Choice as the metro area’s top Chinese restaurant. Other winners include Snooze (Readers’ Choice best breakfast), Salumeria Cinque Soldi (Editor’s Choice best deli), Sushi Den (Readers’ Choice best sushi), and Pizzeria Locale (Editor’s Choice best meatballs). Upslope Brewing adds a brewhouse

The Daily Camera reports that Boulder’s Upslope Brewing Co. will open a second brewery in its hometown early next year. The 12,000-square-foot space in the Flatiron Industrial Park in east Boulder will add brewing capacity to the original brewhouse at 1501 Lee Hill Road. Upslope, which was founded in 2008, only distributes within Colorado. Other Boulder County brewers expanding include Twisted Pine Brewing which is doubling the size of its Boulder brewery, Avery Brewing which is developing a 96,000-square-foot brewery/eatery and Left Hand Brewing Co. which is upgrading its Longmont facilities.


Chipotle’s sour cream goes sustainable

Colorado’s Chipotle Mexican Grill fast casual chain has upped the sustainable ante in fast casual dining by committing to source sour cream from 100 percent pasture-raised cows, and 65 percent of its cheese from the same.


Breaking news: Boulder to get doughnut shop

The Daily Camera reports that for the first time in five years, the city of Boulder will become home to a stand-alone doughnut shop. Dizzy’s Donuts, which has been in the wholesale doughnut delivery business since last year, plans to open a kitchen and retail store in July. Dizzy’s founder Eric Guthrie said he wondered whether Boulder, a city known for its health kicks and natural foods, would go for the sugary treats.

“Because it’s Boulder, our plan of attack for that is what you can call (Dizzy’s) gourmet doughnuts… It’s a Boulder-style doughnut with fresh ingredients.”


Praising the state’s little guy distillers

In a recent issue, praised the little guys, the tiny distillers making a great product including two in Colorado: Breckenridge Bourbon Whiskey (“Made at 9,600 feet in the world’s highest distillery), and Dancing Pines Spice Rum (“Bursting with all-natural, whole spices like cinnamon and nutmeg”).


A winning Colorado-born hot dog

Saveur magazine recently listed its top hot dogs in the nation. Among them is Denver-made Continental Sausage Wieners. Saveur notes: “Continental’s nitrate-free wieners are brightly seasoned with celery powder, sea salt, and turbinado sugar.”


Denver corner labelled a delicious destination

The intersection of Federal Boulevard and Alameda Avenue in Denver was named one of America’s Hidden Gems and Delicious Destinations by Cooking Light magazine. Jason Sheehan, the celebrated former dining critic for Westword, sings the praises of the neighborhood as a “place where the city’s miniature versions of Hanoi, Guangdong, and the Distrito Federal all touch.” Sheehan recommends visiting the T-Wa Inn, Empress, 88 Asian Market, Tacos Y Salsas, Super Star Asian, and Pacific Ocean International Supermarket.

A summer escape to Gold Hill

Where should New Yorkers go to escape the summer heat? The food site came up with a list of “Food Pilgrimages You Must Make This Summer” and No. 7 is the Gold Hill General Store in the mountain town of Gold Hill west of Boulder: “They’re known for their huevos rancheros, and their smothered breakfast burrito — a good and spicy hangover cure if ever there was one, topped with green chile sauce and stuffed with eggs, olives, and cheese.”
