AURORA | Aurora is the healthiest and happiest big city in Colorado, and the 12th in the nation, according to a report released Wednesday.

The report, from Prevention Magazine, ranked 100 of the nation’s largest cities on a variety of factors, including access to green space, concert halls and farmers markets, as well as common diseases, depression measures, unemployment rates, and crime. The top spot went to San Jose, Calif.

The report listed Aurora at No. 12, ahead of 18th-ranked Colorado Springs and Denver at No. 21.

Aurora earned the high mark in part because the city had the highest overall health ranking; a figure based on a combination of low diabetes, cancer, and heart disease rates, as well as healthy body mass indexes. Aurora also has “plenty of access to green space,” the report said.

  1. Yeah the green space is where the old hotels on Colfax used to be. They were torn down, no development was accomplished so now the deep and lovely green of bindweed shines emerald for all to see!

        1. Did you see the article about Aurora having the most collisions in the state among the bigger cities?

          1. As far as I can tell Aurorans leap joyfully into their motor vehicles, press on their accelerators with their jaunty footwear and tool about randomly day in and day out. Many enjoy person to person contact with friends and relatives while pointing their cars and trucks in the general direction of their destination as well! Happy, happy, happy, that’s us! Giggling, swerving, bounding over barriers, zipping through topiary, jolting madly into one another and loving every single minute of it. We here in Aurora have something special going on. Special indeed!

          2. I find it terrifying but I used to live in Boston so terrifying is contextual. Here drivers drive as though they’re riding public transportation. It’s like they think they have a right to be where they’re going and the time spent driving is wasted so they’re doing other “important” stuff. In Boston the drivers drive with intensity and hate. You are always in the way and if they could end you to get to their destination 30 seconds sooner they would. Driving is a lethal competition in Boston, it’s more of a happy bumper cars day at the fair in Denver (Except on 70 in the mountains, that can get intense).

          3. I’ve driven 70 many times. I know what you mean. Never been to Boston. New York is where I was afraid. I was in cabs the entire stay but, wanted to pay them to let me out.

          4. I’m from Boston as well, and the comparison here is staggering!! I’m glad I moved here! I couldn’t be happier! Boston is a miserable, rotten, rude, negative place to live. It’s a pit of negativity and people that only care about themselves and look at the ground when you try to make eye-contact and say “hello”. Aurora and Colorado are truly an amazing place to live! : )

  2. Not surprised! Aurora is an excellent and happy place to live. Yes, it has it’s “areas”, but if you want to see a REAL ghetto, go to NYC, Boston and LA, then come back and see what your opinion is!!
