Police say man stole then crashed state police cruiser

COLORADO SPRINGS | Authorities say a Colorado man is under arrest after stealing a police cruiser and crashing it.

Richard Payne, 36, was arrested Saturday in Colorado Springs. Police say an officer responded to a report of a suspicious person and struggled with Payne, who then took the officer’s cruiser.

Police say Payne drove onto Interstate 25 but soon lost control of the car and it rolled over. He was arrested at the crash site.

Payne is being held on $100,000 bond and is due in court Tuesday. It is not clear if Payne has an attorney to comment on his behalf.

The Colorado Springs Police Department said he was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police office, aggravated vehicle theft and driving under the influence of drugs.
