COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. | A Colorado Springs woman who was accused of failing to secure a loaded handgun that her 3-year-old son used to accidentally shoot his 2-year-old brother was sentenced to probation.

The Gazette reports 31-year-old Monica Abeyta was sentenced Monday to four years of supervised probation after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Police say the younger boy was seriously wounded in June after the older brother found the gun in Abeyta’s backpack. The boy has mostly recovered.

The mother told authorities she usually kept the gun in a lockbox but had removed it the night before after hearing a noise.

Abeyta pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse in October. Under the deferred sentence, all charges against her will be dismissed if she meets the probation requirements.
