A mother and her child injured in a car accident with an RTD bus Monday night remained hospitalized Tuesday.

Police said the mother, who had a lacerated liver and broken collarbone after the crash near east First Avenue and Peoria Street, underwent surgery and remained hospitalized. The child, who was in a car seat at the time of the crash, was seriously injured and remained hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. Monday after police say the woman tried to pass a bus that was stopped at a bus stop.

The woman, who was driving a Mazda CX9, tried to navigate around the bus but failed to do so, hitting the back corner of the bus.

Police said the bus driver wasn’t seriously injured but was transported to an area hospital as a precaution. None of the 15 passengers on the bus were hurt.

Investigators don’t believe alcohol or excessive speed were a factor in the crash and it’s unclear if the woman driving the Mazda could face charges.
