Woman, 89, dies after pit bull attack at Golden home

GOLDEN |  An 89-year-old woman has died after she and her 12-year-old grandson were attacked by two pit bulls last week at a home in Golden, family members said.

Golden police say the two were attacked Wednesday afternoon, and both dogs have since been euthanized. The woman’s family confirmed on Sunday that she died and said the boy, who was seriously injured, has been released from the hospital.

The victims’ names have not been released.

Officers called to the scene of the attack found blood leading into the home and immediately went to the backyard, where the dogs were mauling the woman. They used stun guns and less-lethal shotguns but weren’t able to separate the dogs from the victim until additional officers arrived.

The boy, who escaped the attack and sought refuge at a neighbor’s home, was ultimately air-lifted to a children’s hospital, and his grandmother was hospitalized with critical injuries.

Police say the boy and his grandmother were acquainted with the dogs. The City of Golden does not have laws that ban certain dog breeds.

Aurora lifted its years-long ban on pit-bull breeds and some mixes last year.

What happened to the dogs owner? They should be charged with manslaughter at the least.

It was the family pet.

They were the family pets. There were two dogs who are rightfully dead now. Golden would have been safer if they had a non pit bull law. I do hope Aurora also sees this.

I hope this death weighs heavily on former councilmember Allison Hiltz, who spearheaded the movement on the council to overturn the will of the voters and a pit bull ban. Blood is on her hands if this happens in Aurora, and it will.

The will of the voters should never be circumvented, regardless of one’s viewpoint. Our politicians disregard the public all-too often and that is a huge problem in this country.

I tried and tried to warn Alison Hiltz and the rest of Council about pit bulls with my prior knowledge to no avail. As this case states it’s not so much that any dog can attack at some time or another. The key is that pit bulls will not stop until their victim escapes or stops moving through death or near death, no matter how many people try to stop them.

Aurora very much needs a vote on this again to forever keep pit bulls out of our community or our current City Council to “see the light” and return to the ban already voted by the people.
