DENVER | Colorado wildlife officials say a mother bear may have caused a dumpster to tip over and accidentally kill her cub.
The Denver Post reports a bear was likely climbing into or out of the dumpster in Jefferson County when it tipped and her weight crushed the younger animal’s neck.
The 30-pound (14-kilogram) male bear cub was discovered with its head and front paws extending from underneath the side of the dumpster in the county west of Denver.
The Colorado State Patrol was alerted at 7 a.m. Monday.
A Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokesman could not definitively say when or how the trash receptacle fell over.
The spokesman says uneven ground beneath the dumpster made it easy to overturn.
A department social media post calls the death “highly unusual.”
