Coroner identifies man struck, killed on north Aurora road Jan. 5


AURORA | The man struck and killed on East Smith Road in Aurora earlier this month has been identified as Meredith Lynn Bates, 49.

A spokesperson for the Aurora Police Department said the driver of a Subaru station wagon fatally the struck Bates while he was walking on the road near the intersection of Smith and Quentin Street at about 5:45 p.m. Jan. 5.

Investigators said the driver “unsuccessfully attempted to avoid striking the pedestrian,” according to a news release. Police said the driver of the Subaru stayed on the scene after the collision. The driver was not believed to have been speeding nor intoxicated at the time of the collision.

Bates died at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital shortly after the collision, according to the Adams County Coroner’s office. The exact cause and manner of Bates’ death remain under investigation, according to a spokesperson for the coroner’s office.

The fatal collision marked the first death on an Aurora roadway reported by local police in 2021. Three dozen people died on Aurora roads last year, including 11 pedestrians.
