Coroner identifies 2 Aurora men killed in separate March shootings

AURORA | The Adams County Coroner’s Office has identified two Aurora men shot and killed in separate incidents last month as 22-year-old Surajadin Mohamed Ahmed and 19-year-old Daveon Michael Brooks.

Police found Ahmed with a gunshot wound in unit 105 at the Windsor Court Apartments on East 16th Avenue shortly before 6 p.m. on March 21, according to information released by the Aurora Police Department last month. He died shortly thereafter at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital, according to the coroner’s office.

Police have arrested one man in connection with Ahmed’s death. Police declined to identify the man, or the charges on which he’s being held.

“Because of investigation follow-ups and photo line-ups that still need to be conducted, we have to withhold their name/booking photo for the time being,” a police spokesman said of the suspect.

The same spokesman said “additional arrests are likely to follow” in connection with Ahmed’s death.

Local investigators found Brooks with a gunshot wound lying in the road near the corner of East 30th Avenue and Xanadu Street shortly before 8:30 p.m. March 26. He was also pronounced dead at UCHealth.

Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with Brooks’ death.

The exact cause and manner of death in both cases remain under investigation, according to the coroner’s office.

It’s unclear whether police made any arrests related to either shooting.

Police described the shootings as unrelated, “isolated” incidents, according to Lt. Chris Amsler, spokesman for Aurora police.
