AURORA | Police are trying to determine whether a large party inside a salon on East Colfax Avenue is connected to a nearby shooting just after midnight Sunday that left five young males wounded.
“All of the victims are males ages 16 to 20 years of age and are expected to survive their injuries,” police said in a statement and have no suspects related to the case.
Police were called to the area at 12:04 a.m. to investigate reports of a shooting in the area of Dayton Street and Colfax. When they arrived, they found two male shooting victims and applied a tourniquet to one to help stop his bleeding, according to Aurora police spokesperson Lt. Chris Amsler.
Both were rushed to a nearby hospital.
“Responding Officers also encountered a large crowd of people leaving the area that were believed to have been attending a party at 9709 E. Colfax Ave.,” police said. The address is listed as Rose’s House of Beauty, a salon.
While police were trying to sort out the shooting, three more people “showed up at the Emergency Department of a local hospital.”
Police said the young males were apparently shot while on the 1500 block of Dayton Street, around the corner of the party.
The shooting comes on the heels of two school-related shootings in Aurora during the past two weeks,, wounding nine teenagers and netting four arrests. Those shootings have prompted calls for communitywide action to stem the gun violence. Hours before the shooting, Aurora’s police chief appeared at a community prayer event focusing on the recent gun violence.
Dayton Street was closed between Colfax and East 16th Avenue for several hours after the shooting as police tried to determine if the shooting was related to the party.
