In a Facebook post on Friday, police said a man called police Wednesday morning and said a man pointed a rifle at him before walking toward the high school, waving the gun around.

The school year has not yet started at Vista PEAK, but police said the school’s football team was there practicing. The school was placed on lockdown while officers surrounded the area.

When police found the man with the rifle, he followed officers’ commands and laid down on the ground, police said. Officers then realized the gun was an airsoft rifle.

The man’s name was not immediately released.

Police said the incident is a reminder that gun owners — and even toy gun owners — need to practice basic gun safety.

“Please don’t place our officers in the position of trying to determine if your ‘toy’ gun is real or not,” police wrote.
