Harry Bull, new Cherry Creek Schools superintendent

AURORA | Harry Bull will replace Mary Chesley as the superintendent of the Cherry Creek Schools District in July. The last step in Bull’s road to the Cherry Creek superintendent post came after a two-week waiting period following the Cherry Creek Board of Education’s vote Jan. 14 to name Bull the sole finalist. Officials said the 2-week wait between naming Bull a finalist and offering him the job is prescribed by law.

The board voted unanimously to name Bull, currently the district’s assistant superintendent of human resources, the only finalist to replace Chesley, who announced in December that she will retire at the end of the 2012-13 school year. Bull has interviewed with the board collectively and individually. Before casting their votes, each board member praised Bull, citing his 30-year tenure in the district as teacher, administrator and assistant superintendent.

“Dr. Bull understands the culture of Cherry Creek, as well as the fiscal demands of such a large district,” said Board President Jennifer Churchfield. “There is a tremendous amount of work to be done in the next five years,” she added, pointing to the implementation of the Colorado Academic Standards, Senate Bill 191 and the district’s STEM 2025 initiative. “He has the experience and the respect to navigate these complex issues.”
