STEAMBOAT SPRINGS | A grand jury has cleared the Grand County sheriff in the shooting of a suspected burglar in September.
District Attorney Brett Barkey announced Thursday that the jury found that Sheriff Brett Schroetlin was justified in shooting 20-year-old Connor James MacLaird. MacLaird survived. He was allegedly rushing at the sheriff with a knife when he was shot.
The grand jurors decided there was enough evidence to charge MacLaird with several crimes, including first-degree assault on a police officer and second-degree burglary.
