AURORA | A paralyzed gang member accused of killing his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter pleaded guilty to a lesser charge last month and is set for sentencing this week.
Hasan Jones, 24, pleaded guilty last month to child abuse resulting in death, according to Arapahoe County prosecutors. In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dropped a first-degree murder charge against Jones.
Vikki Migoya, a spokeswoman for the DA’s office, said this week she wasn’t sure what sentence Jones could face at his Aug. 18 sentencing.
Had Jones been convicted of first-degree murder, he would have faced a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Jones, 25, was initially charged with child abuse resulting in death stemming from the August 2014 slaying of Ny’Ari Hines. But late last year, just before he was set for arraignment on that charge, prosecutors opted to file a more serious charge of first-degree murder against Jones.
Police said Jones was caring for the girl when she stopped breathing. Doctors later said there were signs that she had been abused.
