SUMMERFUN: Show time like you’ve never seen it: Fairmount Cemetery Summer Cinema

It will certainly take more than one visit to this historic gem that borders  Denver and Aurora to see Fairmount’s 280 acres of trees, monuments, gardens and historical structures. What better way to spend a brisk fall day than admiring the Ivy Chapel, built in 1890, that reflects 13th Ecclesiastical Gothic architecture? In the summer time, this historical gem that borders Denver and Aurora gets even better with its family-friendly movie series that starts in June of this year. The movies begin at sunset and are generally set up on the upper Ivy Terrace. Visitors are also advised to bring their own picnic blankets and chairs. Snacks and treats are available for purchase. In 2015, Fairmount featured family favorites such as “Despicable Me,” “Big Hero 6” and “The Sound of Music.” But perhaps the best part of all is admission is free.

If fighting off bugs to watch a flick outdoors is not so much your thing, you’re in luck because Denver’s most historic cemetery is also home to the Fairmount Mausoleum,  which features the largest private collection of stained glass in the city of Denver and one of the largest in the state. You can take your time perusing that beautiful collection indoors. Or if you’re looking for something a bit historic and perhaps spooky, be sure to tour the carefully crafted graves and mausoleums that hold the movers and shakers that made the metro area what it is today.

When you spread your picnic blanket out and settle in for a film at Fairmount, you will be using the cemetery space in the same way residents used it nearly 130 years ago: as a gathering place for picnics and celebrations.

Located at 430 South Quebec Street, Denver. or 303-399-0692.
