SUMMERFUN: Take a Ride on the Wild Side of Clear Creek in Golden

Despite constant advertisements spewed by The North Face, REI and other outdoor merchants, you don’t have to be a professional whitewater kayaker to enjoy a gurgling strip of water. On the contrary, an afternoon spent slowly moseying along a creek is one of the more enjoyable ways to pass a summer day — no training required. (And, sure, it may seem geeky, but wearing a life jacket may not be the worst idea.)

And you don’t have to travel far, by car or on the actual river, to get your tube-toting druthers. A favorite rafting sequence of some of the hacks at this very publication is to park in the lot beside Lions Park, then schlep up Clear Creek Trail and enter the river near the 6th Avenue overpass. From their, slurp and float down river through the Clear Creek White Water Park (it’s tame, dont worry) to about Vanover Park at the approximate intersection of 10th Street and Ford Street. Get out, hike back up trail and repeat. All. Damn. Day. Sure, it’s a little repetitive, but the company of decent friends and better oat sodas makes this section of downtown Golden an unparalleled setting for a carefree summer afternoon. The fact that free Coors Brewery Tour (three free beers!) starts not a 10-minute walk up the road certainly doesn’t hurt the magnetism of this strip of Front Range bliss. And for voracious readers of “The Beeroness,” Golden City Brewery is nestled right on the banks of the creek at 920 1/2 12th St. Finishing the day with a pint of GCB’s Clear Creek Gold Pale Ale makes for a fine exclamation point to a session of nonchalant tubin’.
