DENVER | The city of Denver has agreed to pay $65,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by a former jail inmate who was assaulted by a deputy.
The Denver Post reports (https://dpo.st/2gWkNAR ) that city council approved the settlement for Kyle Askin and his attorney on Monday.
Video of the 2014 incident shows Deputy Thomas Ford punch the unruly inmate in the booking area of the Downtown Detention Center.
Jail leaders had fired Ford for the assault, but he was reinstated after the Career Service Authority Board overturned the decision. The city is still appealing the change.
A Denver Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman says Ford remains on the force but doesn’t have contact with inmates.
The 2014 incident sparked a reform of the department, which included the development of more restrictive use-of-force policy.
