Coroner IDs man killed outside north Aurora motel

AURORA | A man killed Thursday morning in the parking lot of a north Aurora motel — a slaying that caused road and school closures — died of a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the coroner’s office.

The Arapahoe County coroner’s office said 32-year-old Marquette D. Killingsworth’s death was a homicide.

The shooting happened around 3 a.m. in the parking lot of the Riviera Motel, 9100 E. Colfax Ave.

Police said when they responded they found a wounded man who was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

While police were investigating, a man reported a robbery at the motel.

“At this time the reported robbery is unfounded and being treated as a separate assault case,” police said in a statement.

Detectives from the Aurora police Major Crime/Homicide Unit are investigating the slaying but no information on a suspect or motive has been released.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact Detective Matt Ingui at 303-739-6067. Anonymous tipsters can also use Metro Denver Crime Stoppers by calling 720-913-7867, and may be eligible for a $2,000 reward.
