Shooting, robbery lead to north Aurora school, road closures

AURORA | An early-morning slaying and robbery Thursday in north Aurora led to road closures on East Colfax Avenue and a late start at Boston Elementary School.

Police tweeted around 3:30 a.m. that a man had been shot in a parking lot of the Riviera Motel and later died at a local hospital.

On social media, police pleaded with the media and public to avoid the area around the motel at 9100 E. Colfax Ave.

Police eventually closed Colfax from Beeler Street west to Akron Street for several hours, and said the nearby elementary school was on a lockout and would start at 10 a.m.

After several hours and pleas from police for the media not to broadcast where officers were positioned, police said they arrested a man on a robbery charge, but said they weren’t sure if he is connected to the slaying.

Neither the name of the victim nor the suspect have been released.
