Aurora Congressman Coffman calls for VA head to step down after hospital mismanagement

AURORA | Congressman Mike Coffman today called for the head of the Veterans Affairs to resign after mismanagement of the Aurora veterans hospital project and others.

In a statement released Monday, Coffman said chronic mismanagement of large projects and patient safety issues means Secretary Eric Shinseki should step down.

“If he had these same responsibilities as an Army officer he would have been relieved a long time ago for his lack of leadership. If he fails to resign then the President, as the Commander-in-Chief, has a duty to fire him for gross incompetence,” Coffman said in a statement.

The Aurora hospital has been plagued with cost overruns in the past few years and a recent report from the Phoenix VA uncovered alleged wrongdoing in keeping patients on long waiting lists, resulting in some veterans dying while waiting for treatment.

Representatives for the VA were not immediately available for comment.
